Course Overview: Music fundamentals. Elementary counterpoint. Basic principles of diatonic harmony, voice leading and analysis. All diatonic triads and their inversions.

Learning Objectives: Prepared by Dr. Texu Kim

  1. Fluently interpret basic elements (pitch and rhythm related) of Western music.

  2. Construct two-part counterpoint in the style of 16th century Western art music.

  3. Identify diatonic triads in root position or inversions using Roman Numerals, and recognize common chord progressions in Western music.

  4. Realize figured bass and harmonize a simple melody in three- or four-part choral setting and melody/accompaniment setting.

  5. Respect diverse genres/styles of music.
