Course Overview: Music fundamentals. Elementary counterpoint. Basic principles of diatonic harmony, voice leading and analysis. All diatonic triads and their inversions.

Upon completion of this course students will have gained fluency in the basic syntax and applied foundations of Western music; students will then have the option of using this fluency as a conceptual tool in all their subsequent musical study and professional musical activity, in the form of both consciously applied understanding and unconscious context. Both applications are essential to musical growth and should be viewed as equally important.
